Short answer: no. Longer answer: follower count is close to the least useful number for predicting whether someone will do well at this, and I'd been doing it a while before I fully believed that.
The number that actually matters
Not how many people can see you. How many people do something because you said so.
Those are different numbers, and they are wildly different for most accounts. Someone with 50,000 followers built through viral content might have a few hundred who genuinely listen. Someone with a 300-person WhatsApp group they've run for two years might have 300.
The second person is the better partner. Every time.
A test you can run today
Post something that asks for a small action — read this, watch this, tell me what you think. Then count the replies, not the likes.
If people respond, you have an audience. If it's silence from a large following, you have reach without trust, and reach without trust doesn't convert into anything.
Some of the strongest partners I work with started with a WhatsApp group or a classroom of students. No public presence at all. What they had was people who'd take their word for something.
Why small and engaged beats large and passive
Trust doesn't scale, and this business runs on trust. Opening a trading account and funding it is a high-friction, genuinely risky decision. Nobody does that because a stranger with a big account posted a link. They do it because someone they've listened to for months said it was worth a look.
Small audiences let you follow up. Rebates pay on continued trading, so retention is everything. With 200 people you can answer every question personally. With 20,000 you can't, and the ones who drift away just drift away.
Engaged audiences self-select. People who follow a trading educator closely are already interested in trading. A large general following is mostly people who will never open an account, however many of them there are.
Small communities forgive the learning curve. Your first few months will be clumsy. A community that knows you gives you room. A cold audience judges instantly.
What "enough" actually looks like
There's no threshold, and I'd distrust anyone who quotes one. But here's the shape of an audience that works:
- People reply to you, unprompted
- They ask questions and act on the answers
- You could name twenty of them
- They've been around a while — you're not starting from scratch every month
- They're interested in trading specifically, not just following you generally
If most of that is true, you have enough. If none of it is true, more followers won't help — that's the thing to work on first, and I'd tell you so on the call rather than sign you up to be disappointed.
Who this works well for
The partners who do best are usually building something that would exist anyway:
Trading educators — you already have students who trust your judgment, which is the whole thing.
Community leaders — a WhatsApp group, a Telegram channel, a Discord. High trust, high frequency.
Analysts — people follow you for your read on the market and act on it.
Creators and content partners — if the content is genuinely useful rather than hype, the audience converts.
Signal providers — engaged by definition, though be careful here: your incentive must stay aligned with your subscribers doing well, not with them trading more.
Common thread: none of them started in order to become an IB. They built something real, and the partnership sits underneath it.
What actually disqualifies someone
Not size. These:
No relationship with your audience. Bought followers, engagement pods, a list you've never spoken to.
Planning to monetise and vanish. You'll get a few signups and nothing after.
Unwillingness to be honest about risk. If you're not prepared to tell people that most retail traders lose money, this will go badly — for them first, then for you. Clients who feel misled leave, and they tell people.
Start where you are
If you're reading this thinking your group is too small to bother: it probably isn't. Apply anyway. Worst case I tell you honestly that it's early and what to work on first — which is more useful than waiting two years for a number that was never the point.
No income is promised or implied — earnings depend on your audience and their trading activity. Please read the risk disclosure. Apply here — it takes two minutes and costs nothing.
